How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 133520 and Class 55 on the BOL and note the package type (e.g., 50 lb bags on a pallet, fiber drums, or corrugated boxes).
- Palletize tightly and moisture-proof: use a slip sheet, stretch-wrap with a top sheet, and banding to prevent bag scuffing and caking during transit.
- For drums, confirm rings are seated and sealed; use drum pallets or rings, add corner protection, and block-and-brace to stop roll or shift.
- Keep units square to the pallet with no overhang; avoid double-stacking fragile bag layers and request non-stack if bags could crush under load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 simplifies quoting and lowers typical LTL costs compared to higher-class mineral powders.
- No density-based reclass risk—reduces disputes, rebills, and delays for bulk bag, box, or drum shipments.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and special handling, improving transit flexibility and lane options.
- Clear packaging allowance (bags/boxes/drums) lets operations standardize SKUs across suppliers and plants for smoother routing.
