How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item fits the listing: cast magnesium or magnesium alloy anodes in cloth sacks with at least 60% earthen backfill, and cite this on the BOL.
- Secure wire leads so they cannot pierce the sack—coil and tape the ends or cap them, then place a corrugated pad over the lead bundle before palletizing.
- Build stable pallets: line the deck with cardboard, stack sacks in a brick pattern, add edge boards and stretch wrap, and avoid pallet overhang to limit abrasion.
- Keep units dry and tidy: use a poly liner or bag-in-box for small anodes to catch fines, and label skids “NMFC 133640 – Class 60” to deter reclass during inspection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes versus density-based freight.
- Non-hazardous status cuts costs by avoiding hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options for LTL moves.
- Clear packaging spec (cloth sack, 60%+ backfill) minimizes inspection delays and documentation back-and-forth.
- Lower claim exposure: protected leads and consolidated pallet builds reduce sack tears, spillage, and over/short/damaged charges.
