How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 133650 on the bill of lading and describe the goods as cast magnesium anodes, NOI, noting if wire leads are present; Class 65 applies without a density entry.
- Protect wire leads from kinks and pull damage—coil and tape them against each anode, add edge protectors, and keep banding off the cables.
- Package ruggedly but light: corrugated trays or wood crates with dividers, then shrink-wrap and palletize; example: 40 hull anodes per skid with blocking to prevent shift.
- Stow away from wet cargo, acids, and oxidizers to limit corrosion and staining, and mark pallets 'Do Not Stack' if lead protrusions are vulnerable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 yields predictable LTL rates and lowers reclass risk, even when carton sizes vary.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and broadens carrier options, improving transit flexibility.
- Simple rating (no density breakpoints) speeds quoting and booking, shortening the order-to-ship cycle.
- Focused protection of wire leads reduces returns and warranty claims on cathodic protection projects.
