How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the anodes are not cast (e.g., extruded rods, ribbon, or pressed/sintered) and note “other than cast” on the BOL to align with Class 70.
- Package as bundles or coils on a pallet: use moisture barrier wrap, corner boards, and cap or tape over any threaded or crimped fittings to prevent abrasion.
- Stiffen long or slender pieces with wood slats or PVC sleeves, and use dunnage between layers so ribbon or rod anodes don’t kink during LTL handling.
- List “Magnesium metal anodes, other than cast, in packages — Class 70” on documents; keep units dry and away from corrosive liquids for clean delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 70 removes density calculations and speeds up LTL quotes.
- Lower risk of reclass: describing “non-cast” packaged anodes curbs carrier disputes and rebills.
- Fewer compliance hurdles: non-hazardous solid metal reduces special handling and routing delays.
- Better damage control: package-ready guidance (barrier wrap, bracing) limits OS&D and warranty costs.
