How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item as “Magnesium metal or alloy articles, NOI” and cite NMFC 133680 Class 150 on the BOL to prevent reclass disputes.
- Use rigid boxes or wood crates with blocking to immobilize extrusions, billets, cast housings, or plate so pieces can’t rub and create fines.
- Add separators or corner guards between soft Mg surfaces and fasten bundles with non-abrasive strapping; avoid loose fill that allows shifting.
- Keep to solid articles only—no powders or turnings—and line packaging to limit moisture intrusion that could stain or corrode magnesium.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 150 rating speeds quotes and reduces surprise reclass or inspection fees on magnesium shapes and castings.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork, cutting total landed cost for LTL moves.
- Crated or boxed packaging reduces nicking and OS&D claims on soft Mg alloys, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
- Clear NMFC identification streamlines carrier acceptance, improving pickup reliability and on-time performance.
