| 133740.00 | Castings or Forgings, NOI, see Note, item 133742, in packages, having a density of 15 pounds or greater per cubic foot, see Note, item 133743 | 70 |
Notes
Note 133742: NOTE-Applies only on articles manufactured solely by a casting or forging process.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify density at or above 15 lb/ft³ for each handling unit; compute weight ÷ cubic feet and print the result on the BOL to lock in Class 70.
- Package as crates or well-palletized cartons; block and brace, and use edge/corner guards to protect machined magnesium surfaces from impact and galvanic scuffs.
- Keep solid castings/forgings separate from chips, turnings, or powder, which classify differently and may introduce hazmat considerations.
- Reference NMFC Notes 133742 and 133743 on paperwork; label “NMFC 133740, Class 70, packaged” and include accurate piece counts per pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 70 for dense packaged magnesium yields competitive LTL rates compared with lighter-density freight.
- Documented density reduces reclass and reweigh disputes, cutting chargebacks and avoiding delivery delays.
- Proper crating and palletization lower claim risk on high-value aerospace and EV magnesium parts.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and opens more carrier and service options.
