Notes

Note 133802: NOTE-Applies on materials, rough hot extruded, or cast, to be re-heated for purpose of re-rolling, re-extruding, forging or remelting.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use NMFC 133800 when shipping solid magnesium stock in the listed shapes—ingots, pigs, blooms, billets, slabs, rods, or bars. Do not use for chips, turnings, or powder.
  2. On the BOL, state the shape and count plus the code and class, for example: “8 bundles magnesium rods – NMFC 133800 – Class 60.” No density entry is required.
  3. Bundle rods/bars tightly with composite or plastic strapping and wood dunnage to avoid abrasion and galvanic contact with steel. Cap rod ends and prevent overhang on pallets.
  4. Stage ingots/pigs on cribbed pallets with forklift clearance. Keep loads dry, wrap to deter corrosion stains, and block-and-brace to stop shifting during LTL transfers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 60 means faster quotes, easier TMS rating, and fewer reclass fees versus density-based items.
  • Nonhazardous solid metal avoids hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, lowering total landed cost.
  • One code for multiple shapes simplifies mixed-load paperwork and streamlines dock handling across carriers.
  • Proper bundling and cribbing reduce damage claims on soft magnesium surfaces, improving OTIF performance and claim ratios.
