How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the rule: use boxes, crates, or secure bands to lift-truck pallets; plates 1/2 inch or thicker may ship loose or bundled.
- Protect edges and faces with wood dunnage, corner guards, and slip sheets to prevent gouges on soft magnesium surfaces during clamp or fork handling.
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 133830, Class 65, and note thickness and piece/bundle count, especially when shipping loose plate to speed terminal check-in.
- Keep loads dry and covered; use stretch film or waterproof wrap to limit oxidation and staining in humid lanes or long dwell times.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 65 rating keeps LTL rates competitive for dense, flat metal, lowering per-pound costs versus higher-class commodities.
- Clear packaging options—boxed, crated, pallet-fastened, or loose ≥1/2 in.—reduce reclassification risk and surprise fees.
- Damage control from proper edge protection and banding cuts claims, chargebacks, and production delays for machine shops and fabricators.
- Simple, single-class listing speeds quoting and carrier acceptance, improving turnaround for project buys and JIT replenishment.
