How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 133800 when shipping solid magnesium stock in the listed shapes—ingots, pigs, blooms, billets, slabs, rods, or bars. Do not use for chips, turnings, or powder.
- On the BOL, state the shape and count plus the code and class, for example: “8 bundles magnesium rods – NMFC 133800 – Class 60.” No density entry is required.
- Bundle rods/bars tightly with composite or plastic strapping and wood dunnage to avoid abrasion and galvanic contact with steel. Cap rod ends and prevent overhang on pallets.
- Stage ingots/pigs on cribbed pallets with forklift clearance. Keep loads dry, wrap to deter corrosion stains, and block-and-brace to stop shifting during LTL transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 60 means faster quotes, easier TMS rating, and fewer reclass fees versus density-based items.
- Nonhazardous solid metal avoids hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, lowering total landed cost.
- One code for multiple shapes simplifies mixed-load paperwork and streamlines dock handling across carriers.
- Proper bundling and cribbing reduce damage claims on soft magnesium surfaces, improving OTIF performance and claim ratios.
