How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your shipment is boxed: cartons of masks, face shields, respirators, gas masks, or manual resuscitators all qualify under NMFC 134140 at Class 200.
- List what’s inside each box on the BOL (e.g., 12 elastomeric respirators with replaceable filters). Filters installed or packaged separately are still covered.
- Protect delicate components: bag face shields to prevent scratches and avoid compressing respirator valves. Use dividers or foam to keep items from shifting.
- Skip density-based rating. Mark the BOL with “NMFC 134140, Class 200” and keep carton dimensions compact to avoid minimum cubic rule triggers with some carriers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 means quick quotes and fewer reweigh/reclass disputes—no density calculations or dimension-based guessing.
- Non-hazardous classification removes hazmat paperwork and fees, speeding pickup and reducing compliance risk.
- Standard boxed packaging lowers damage rates for clear face shields and molded respirators, cutting claim costs.
- One NMFC for with or without filters simplifies procurement and shipping across SKUs, stabilizing freight budgets.
