How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 134214, Class 70 on the BOL and specify the form: boxed sets or wrapped rolls, plus piece count (e.g., 10 boxes of wood-slat partitions).
- Protect delicate slats: use corner guards in boxes, band gently over wide protectors, and add ‘Do Not Stack’ labels; for rolls, cap ends and use crush sleeves.
- Palletize to avoid overhang; orient long boxes with grain parallel to pallet deck boards and strap with stretch wrap and a top sheet to resist abrasion.
- Control moisture for wood components: add a liner or poly sleeve, keep off damp floors with dry pallets, and avoid tarp leaks during linehaul.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and prevents density disputes, producing predictable LTL quotes across lanes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat fees, paperwork, and tender delays.
- Purposeful packaging for slatted materials cuts breakage and claim costs, preserving margins on décor and millwork shipments.
- Clear NMFC mapping reduces reclassification penalties and exceptions, speeding dock handling and improving on-time performance.
