How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle wire rope mats with steel strapping and edge protection; palletize rubber mats with cross-dunnage to stop sag and provide fork entry.
- Keep dimensions within LTL limits and avoid pallet overhang; for 8×12 ft mats, consider flatbed or schedule Over-Dimension service with your carrier.
- Mark weight and lift points clearly; use 4x4 runners for forklift clearance and request liftgate or on-site equipment when shipping to quarries or jobsites.
- Isolate oily wire rope mats from absorbent cargo using poly sheeting; list NMFC 134230, Class 60 on the BOL—no density entry required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 pricing for dense mats helps secure lower per-pound LTL rates compared to higher classes.
- Simple, density-free classification minimizes reclass disputes and accelerates quoting and tendering.
- Correct bundling and pallet prep reduce handling time and claim risk, keeping construction and blasting schedules on track.
- Consolidating mats into tight bundles improves cube utilization and can lower minimum charge impacts.
