How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 134270 and select the correct class (65 or 85) based on the mat construction and configuration; when in doubt, confirm with your carrier before pickup.
- Bundle panels into tight, evenly supported packages. Protect interlocks, edges, and anti-skid faces with corner guards, wood blocking, and slip sheets to prevent FOD risks.
- Create forklift-friendly packages: band to skids or crated bases, show center of gravity, and mark “Do Not Fork Through Slots” where panels have connectors or apertures.
- Document counts and dimensions on the BOL—e.g., 12 composite runway panels, bundled 48 x 96 x 30 in—so terminals can stage and stack safely without rework.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-size costs: using the correct 65–85 class band reduces reclass fees and stabilizes LTL quotes for heavy, high-value runway mat shipments.
- Fewer claims and downtime: reinforced edge and surface protection minimizes damage that can delay mission-critical operations like rapid runway repair or UAV pads.
- Faster tender-to-pickup: a clean NMFC listing (134270) and clear package details speed carrier acceptance and reduce terminal handling time.
- Operational continuity: non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and allows consolidation with ground support gear for project-based deployments.
