How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use leak-tight packaging: double-wall cartons with poly liners and taped seams, or tight-head HDPE/steel drums with sealed bungs; add absorbent pads for contingencies.
- Control temperature exposure: avoid hot trailers that liquefy fat; request early-morning pickups or temp-control in warm climates, and prevent repeated freeze–thaw cycles.
- Palletize securely: drum rings or straps, four-way pallets, and chocks; keep carton stacks stable under 48 inches when product may soften, then wrap and corner-board.
- Describe precisely on the BOL: “Chicken fat, edible, in boxes or drums, non-hazardous.” Include piece count, packaging type, and gross weight; expect carrier rating as Class N/A.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status cuts fees and simplifies paperwork, reducing accessorial risk compared with regulated liquids or chemicals.
- Leak-resistant packaging lowers OS&D claims and reclass charges by preventing seepage that can trigger inspections or carrier exceptions.
- Packaging choice tunes cost: drums minimize spill risk for long hauls, while cartons on pallets can reduce handling time and liftgate fees for smaller LTL moves.
- Clear NMFC identification and precise BOL data speed dock processing, improving on-time performance and limiting detention or reweigh/reclass charges.
