How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 134470, Class 65 on the BOL and list the commodity as edible cracklings; note packaging as corrugated boxes with food-grade liners (refer to Note 134472 if applicable).
- Use poly liners and double-wall boxes to contain fats; cap each box weight to manageable limits (e.g., 40–50 lb) to reduce crush risk and oil seepage.
- Palletize with slip sheets, corner boards, and stretch wrap; avoid overhang and mark “This Side Up” to minimize grease transfer to adjacent freight.
- Avoid heat exposure; request a clean, dry van and schedule pickups away from peak heat to keep fats stable and prevent odor or residue issues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and simplifies multi-lane pricing.
- Non-hazardous status reduces paperwork, carrier restrictions, and accessorial risk.
- Correct boxed packaging lowers reclass/inspection exposure and curbs leakage-related claims.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds tendering and improves acceptance across food-capable carriers.
