How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use leak-resistant boxes with liners and cold packs for cuts; switch to lined crates for whole birds or bone-in quarters. Palletize, wrap tightly, and avoid overhang.
- Confirm temperature control needs: use gel or dry ice as permitted, insulated shippers, and request reefer service if required. Note “Food — Game (NOI)” on the BOL to prevent reclass.
- Group SKUs by species (venison, wild boar, pheasant) and mark use-by dates on outer labels for quick receiving at restaurants or distributors.
- Strap crates with corner protectors and add absorbent pads to prevent leaks that trigger cleanup fees. Always choose new, food-grade packaging materials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 provides predictable rating, simplifying quotes and keeping freight charges consistent across LTL carriers.
- Accurate NMFC mapping reduces reclass risk and inspection delays, protecting delivery windows for perishable inventory.
- Proper boxing/crating limits leakage and damage claims, avoiding costly accessorials like rewrap or cleanup.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and tendering, helping secure better rates on established meat shipping lanes.
