How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use leakproof, food-grade boxes with liners and absorbent pads; palletize tightly and maintain cold chain via refrigerated LTL or gel packs (avoid dry ice to keep non-hazardous status).
- Mark cartons “Keep Refrigerated,” “Perishable,” and “This Side Up”; request no-top-load handling. Example: 40 lb frog legs per box on a 48x40 pallet, stacked to the box crush rating.
- Print NMFC 134560, Class 100 on the BOL. Describe as “Meat—Turtle/Terrapin/Frog, Boxed” and include temperature setpoint or “cool service required.”
- Verify carrier food-safety protocols and any wildlife/USDA/USFWS/state compliance for these species. Schedule pickups to minimize dwell time and avoid weekend holds.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 removes density calculations, enabling predictable quotes and fewer reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, expanding carrier options.
- Boxed format integrates smoothly with grocery and restaurant distribution, reducing leakage-related claims.
- Clear NMFC labeling improves claim outcomes and lowers OS&D risk in temperature-controlled LTL.
