Notes
Note 134882: NOTE-Applies on vegetable stearine manufactured either by the cold press process or by the hydrogenation of vegetable oils, but will not apply on vegetable oil shortening in semi-solid or plastic form.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product is vegetable stearine or solidified (hydrogenated) vegetable oil and review NMFC Note 134882 if formulations or forms differ.
- Box shipments with food-grade liners; seal inner poly bags to prevent oil dusting or seepage, then stretch-wrap and corner-protect for pallet stability.
- Protect from heat so the product stays solid; request heat-protection or temperature control in hot months to avoid softening and mess during transit.
- Build even, banded pallets with limited top-load pressure to keep slabs or flakes from crushing; label as edible product and mark orientation if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies rating and minimizes reclass or rebill risk versus density-based commodities.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and broadens carrier options for LTL networks.
- Proper boxed presentation with liners reduces leakage claims and preserves food-grade integrity, lowering total landed cost.
- Seasonal heat-protect decisions trade small accessorials for major claim prevention, improving on-time, damage-free performance.
