How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book refrigerated LTL service and set temps: 28–34°F for fresh, 0°F or below for frozen. Note the setpoint on the BOL and request continuous run.
- Contain drip and odor: use food‑grade liners, absorbent pads, and leak‑proof wrap. Palletize securely so carcass parts do not overhang or rub other freight.
- Label clearly: “Venison Carcasses or Parts — NMFC 134890, Class 100,” plus “Keep Refrigerated” and “This Side Up.” Add do‑not‑stack cones for protection.
- Plan appointments at cold docks and include accessorials (reefer service, appointment delivery, limited access if applicable). Record actual gross weight, including ice and packaging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and budgeting, delivering predictable LTL costs without density disputes.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass and reweigh fees, cutting administrative back‑and‑forth and claim exposure.
- Clear temperature and packaging standards improve carrier acceptance and on‑time performance across the cold chain.
- Leak‑proof containment minimizes contamination risk and cleanup charges, lowering OS&D claims and spoilage losses.
