How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Unitize brittle cakes or slabs on 4-way pallets; band with steel or heavy poly and add edge guards to prevent chipping during forklift entry.
- Declare NMFC 135360 and Class 60 on the BOL; this is a fixed class item, so skip density calculations and avoid reclass disputes.
- Use slip sheets or fiberboard between layers so slabs don’t abrade; cap with a top board and stretch-wrap to contain fines or chips.
- Label clearly as “Antimony Metal—Non-Hazardous” to avoid confusion with oxides; request dock handling with forks under the pallet, not under loose pieces.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 rating stabilizes LTL quotes and reduces surprise reclass fees compared with density-based or mixed-metal shipments.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and shortens carrier approval, accelerating turnaround for foundries and alloy producers.
- Proper palletization and edge protection cut scrap losses from chipped slabs, improving yield and insurance outcomes.
- Standard packaging in packages enables consolidation on common lanes, unlocking better tiered freight rates and simpler TMS automation.
