How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 135380 and Class 100 on the BOL; this is a fixed class with no density calculation required.
- Declare hazmat properly: use the SDS to identify the correct UN/NA ID and proper shipping name, and apply required marks and labels on each box.
- Package solids in sealed inner liners (poly bags) inside rigid, durable boxes; keep contents dry, fill voids, and secure lids to prevent release of toxic dust.
- Palletize tightly with strapping and corner protection; segregate from foodstuffs and reactive chemicals, and schedule pickup with a hazmat-authorized LTL carrier.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 enables predictable rating and cleaner freight quotes, reducing reclass and dispute risk.
- Strong hazmat compliance lowers fines, terminal rejections, and claims tied to toxic exposure or contamination.
- Box-specific packing aligned to the NMFC line minimizes accessorials like reweigh/reclass and speeds dock handling.
- Using hazmat-certified carriers streamlines tendering, improves on-time performance, and stabilizes surcharge negotiations.
