How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and book at fixed Class 55; select “packages” in your TMS since this scrap ships bundled, crated, or palletized.
- Build tight bundles of cable coils with steel banding, then palletize or crate; add stretch wrap to contain loose lead fragments. Example: four strapped coils on a 48x40 pallet at ~2,000 lb.
- Describe the commodity precisely: “Lead-covered copper cable scrap for remelting only.” Include any recycler or smelter PO and note non-hazardous status on the BOL.
- Load heavy pallets low and secure with edge protectors; keep scrap cable away from foodstuffs and use proper fork spacing to avoid deforming the lead sheath.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable spend: Class 55 removes density disputes and stabilizes LTL rates for recyclers and scrap consolidators.
- Faster terminal handling: bundled or crated packages reduce OS&D risk and help avoid rewrap fees and delay-related accessorials.
- Compliance clarity: “for remelting only” documentation minimizes inspections and keeps scrap moving through carrier networks.
- Simplified quoting: non-hazmat status and a single classification accelerate bids across multiple carriers.
