How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 135720 and Class 55 on the BOL, and specify piece count by container (e.g., 4 boxes of ingots or 1 drum of metal).
- Use sturdy boxes or steel/fiber drums with tight lids; add dunnage so ingots or plates can’t shift. Example: line drums with corrugate and top-fill voids.
- Palletize heavy boxes or drums on a 48x40 pallet, then band and shrink-wrap. Mark gross weight and “Heavy—Team Lift” where applicable for dock safety.
- Reduce surface oxidation by lining boxes with VCI paper or adding desiccant packs, especially for copper-bearing electrotype materials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low-cost moves: Fixed Class 55 for dense metal keeps LTL rates competitive across zones.
- Simplified paperwork: Non-hazardous status cuts out hazmat forms and fees for faster tendering.
- Lower reclass risk: No density curve here—consistent classification helps avoid disputes and carrier reweigh charges.
- Packaging flexibility: Boxes or drums fit standard LTL networks, improving pickup availability and transit reliability.
