How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item fits Note 13577: pieces are flat, not bent or curved. List alloy/temper and thickness on the BOL for clarity.
- Stack sheets or plates with interleaf paper or film, add edge guards, then band tightly to a skid with wood blocking (e.g., 48x96 plates with 2x4 cleats).
- Bundle blanks/discs by like size, cap with plywood top and bottom, and stretch-wrap to stop telescoping and abrasion during LTL handling.
- Label as Aluminum Flat Goods, note piece count and bundle weight, request No Top Stack, and avoid pallet overhang to protect edges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate use of NMFC 13573 reduces reclass fees and keeps transit timelines predictable.
- Flat aluminum stacks efficiently, improving trailer cube and lowering cost per unit on LTL lanes.
- Robust bundling and edge protection cut surface-damage claims on mill finish or coated parts.
- Non-hazardous designation simplifies carrier onboarding and speeds tendering and pickups.
