How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle or palletize board-like aluminum panels with edge/corner protectors and non-metallic banding; interleave kraft or foam sheets to prevent scuffs and rub marks.
- Clearly note on the BOL: “NMFC 13595, Class 100 — aluminum work platform panels,” and indicate whether they are shipping loose or in packages for matching carrier handling.
- When shipping loose or long-length bundles, block and brace to stop sliding on smooth aluminum surfaces; keep forks fully under the bundle and avoid cantilevering the ends.
- Exclude guardrails, posts, or other attachments; this item covers flat platforms or catwalk panels only. Example: 8–12 ft maintenance panels—bundle 5–10 with dunnage separators.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100—no density calculations or reweigh upcharges tied to cube changes.
- Lower claim risk by protecting edges and finishes, preserving resale value for maintenance and scaffold panels used in plants and on job sites.
- Cleaner audits and fewer reclass fees by precisely matching the commodity: aluminum, board-like panels, shipped loose or packaged, without vertical projections.
- Lightweight aluminum reduces total shipment weight versus steel alternatives, helping control LTL costs while keeping standard non-hazmat acceptance.
