Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
13660.00 Scrap, viz.: Ashes, Borings, Buffings, Dross, Grindings, Sawings, Skimmings, Turnings or Scrap, NOI, in packages 55

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Choose tight-lidded, leakproof packaging for fines and chips—steel drums or poly-lined gaylords for ashes, buffings, grindings, and dross; keep contents dry and fully sealed.
  2. For oily turnings or sawings, drain and wring chips, line containers, and add absorbent pads to eliminate free liquids before palletizing and banding.
  3. Apply hazmat labels and the NMFC item on the BOL, include SDS and emergency contact info, and train dock staff on segregation and spill response.
  4. Keep packages stackable and secure: no overhang, use stretch wrap and corner boards, photograph seals/labels before pickup to document compliance.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • One fixed Class 55 across multiple aluminum scrap forms streamlines quoting and reduces surprises in LTL rating.
  • Hazmat-ready packaging and paperwork cut delays, reclass fees, and penalties—fewer service interruptions and faster turns.
  • Consistent containers improve cube utilization and handling efficiency, lowering freight spend and minimizing damage risk.
  • Clear NMFC alignment speeds movement from plant to smelter/recycler, reducing on-site inventory and safety exposure.
