How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the freight as NMFC 136020, Class 100, and book with a hazmat-capable LTL carrier; apply proper “Dangerous When Wet” labels and clear orientation marks.
- Use UN-rated 4G boxes with sealed inner metal cans containing potassium submerged in mineral oil; pad voids with inert absorbent like vermiculite to prevent movement.
- Keep the load bone-dry: poly-line the box, overbag inner containers, and top-wrap pallets to shield from rain; segregate from water-based goods, acids, and oxidizers.
- Attach the SDS and a complete hazmat description on the bill of lading; schedule pickup windows to allow inspection and avoid delays or refusal at the dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 provides predictable LTL rating and helps avoid costly density reclassifications.
- Proper boxed packaging improves carrier acceptance, reducing rework, detention, and accessorial fees.
- Accurate hazmat declaration lowers risk of penalties, claim exposure, and compliance-related delays.
- Clear classification streamlines quoting for labs and metal suppliers, accelerating time to shipment.
