How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item exactly on the BOL: “Powder, ferro-nickel, in steel drums — NMFC 136030 — Class 60” to prevent reclass and billing disputes.
- Palletize drums using 48x40 pallets, drum rings facing inward, and add two steel or poly bands plus stretch wrap to stop roll-away and cross-dock scuffing.
- Seal tight-head steel drums and add moisture protection (gasket intact, lid ring torqued, shrink wrap cap). Nickel alloys can cake if exposed to humidity.
- Plan handling for weight: use drum grabbers or clamps, avoid double-stacking unless drums are rated, and center drums on pallets to keep the load stable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 60 means no density calculations and fewer carrier reclasses, improving quote accuracy and budgeting.
- Lower risk and claims: rugged steel drums protect fine metal powders, reducing spill cleanup, salvage loss, and downtime.
- Broader carrier options: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies tendering across common LTL networks.
- Faster dock turns: palletized drum units cut touches and detention, and clear NMFC labeling limits exceptions that slow freight.
