How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use precise BOL wording: “Sheet metal, silver plated, not on silver, NOI — boxed; NMFC 136210, Class 150.” This avoids reclass and inspection delays.
- Pack flat in rigid boxes with edge protectors, interleaving sheets with VCI paper or foam. Add desiccants to limit tarnish and prevent scuffing in transit.
- If shipping multiple boxes, place them on a pallet, strap securely, and mark “Do Not Bend” and “Sharp Edges.” Keep height low to reduce flex risk.
- No density calculation is needed for Class 150, but still record accurate box count, dimensions, and weights for clean LTL quotes and pickup planning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 streamlines quoting and rating, eliminating density workups and reducing time-to-book.
- Correct NOI phrasing and boxed packaging minimize reclass fees and claim exposure, protecting margins.
- Damage reduction from edge protection and interleaving lowers claim costs and keeps carrier options open.
- Non-hazardous status means simpler paperwork and broader routing choices, helping secure competitive LTL rates.
