How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy boxes or sealed drums with an inner poly liner to contain fines and protect the brittle metal; add desiccant if humidity is a concern.
- Palletize tightly: center heavy boxes/drums, add corner boards, then band and stretch wrap to prevent shifting during LTL cross-docking.
- List the form and purity on the BOL (e.g., ingots, briquettes, pieces) and mark each handling unit as “Tellurium Metal” for clear identification.
- Quote and book at Class 100 under NMFC 136460; no density calculation needed. Request liftgate or appointment if you don’t have a dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100 eliminates density disputes and reduces reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection, expediting transit.
- Standard box/drum packaging streamlines consolidation with other metals, improving pallet utilization and lane rates.
- Better containment lowers damage and contamination claims on high-value tellurium, protecting margins and customer trust.
