How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book LTL at Class 60 and list packaging as pallets, crates, or metal bins; this item rates without density, so no cube calculations are needed.
- Bundle bars and pigs in tight, steel-banded stacks with edge protectors; add blocking so heavy pieces cannot shift or roll during forklift turns.
- For scrap, use heavy-duty Gaylord boxes or welded bins lined to contain chips and fines; cap and band the container to stop spillage.
- Keep lead-bearing alloy away from food or pharma freight and note “Terne metal—lead/tin alloy” on the BOL for clear handling and segregation.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 60 rating streamlines quoting and can reduce LTL costs versus higher-class metals.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and speeds tender and pickup.
- Package-based classification (no density factor) lowers reclass risk and billing disputes.
- Correct bundling and binning reduce damage, cleanup time, and compliance exposure when moving heavy alloy pieces.
