How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 136490 on the BOL; describe as “Turnings, aluminum and magnesium, mixed — boxed,” and list container count and estimated weight.
- Use heavy-duty gaylord boxes with liners to keep fines contained and dry. Band lids and stretch-wrap pallets to prevent bulging or loss in transit.
- Limit contents to aluminum and magnesium turnings only; avoid mixing steel pieces, solids, or sweepings to protect recycling value and avoid reclass.
- If shipping drums per the listing, note “drums” on paperwork and secure each to pallets; verify carrier acceptance for your lane and service level.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
