How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Line each carton with a sealed poly bag to contain loose fibers and moisture, then use a sturdy double‑wall box. Tape all seams to prevent debris from escaping.
- Palletize cartons in an interlocked pattern and cap-wrap with stretch film; add corner boards to resist crush. Keep stack height conservative if boxes are soft-filled.
- Print the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Moss, NOI, in boxes — NMFC 138440, Class 250.” List piece count, pallet count, and carton dimensions for accurate LTL quotes.
- Protect from weather during pickup and delivery. Use pallet covers in damp conditions and request no top-load if cartons are easily compressible.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 250 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes across carriers.
- Lower claims exposure: sealed liners and rigid cartons minimize shedding and staining, reducing cleanup fees and OS&D events.
- Better cost control: compress product to reduce cube, standardize box sizes, and optimize pallet height to avoid oversize charges.
- Faster carrier selection: a non-hazardous, boxed commodity fits most LTL networks for quicker tenders and smoother transit.
