Notes
Note 138461: NOTE-Applies only on motor fuels with an alcohol or tar content of 50 percent or more. Motor fuels with a petroleum content of 50 percent or more are classified per item 155250.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the blend is non‑regulated by reviewing the SDS and component percentages (alcohol, castor oil, nitromethane). If it triggers DOT hazmat, use NMFC 138461/138462 instead.
- Use sealed inner containers inside strong boxes or approved drums; add liners and absorbent pads, torque closures, and leave headspace to limit expansion and leaks.
- On the BOL, list: “Motor Fuels, NOI, non‑placarded, NMFC 138460, Class 65,” with container counts and sizes. Do not mark Limited Quantity since it’s non‑regulated.
- Palletize upright, stretch‑wrap and band tightly, add corner protection, and keep away from heat or ignition; apply “This Side Up” when appropriate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoids hazmat surcharges, placarding, and special driver handling—lowering total landed cost.
- Fixed Class 65 enables predictable LTL rate shopping and easier tariff comparisons.
- Broad carrier acceptance and no hazmat routing constraints can speed transit and reduce refusals.
- Leak‑resistant packing practices cut OS&D claims and reclass penalties tied to spills.
