How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm which of the two NMFC classes applies by construction and materials (soft leather/nylon vs rigid plastic or wire). No density break is used—quote by class.
- Nest muzzles to cut cube and prevent deformation. Example: stack basket-style dog muzzles nose-to-tail in polybags to reduce space and scuffing.
- Carton-pack tightly with crush protection at the nose/basket. Add edge guards for wire frames and bag small parts like straps or buckles to avoid loss.
- Palletize within the footprint with no overhang; use corner boards and light strapping to avoid bending. For bulk small muzzles, consider lined gaylords; for parcel, use DIM-savvy cartons.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate selection between Class 100–150 minimizes reclass fees and billing disputes, keeping LTL invoices predictable.
- Efficient nesting and right-size cartons lower cubic exposure, helping avoid capacity-based surcharges and improving freight rates.
- Protective packing reduces OS&D from bent wire or creased leather, preserving resale value and cutting return costs.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds dock handling and claims resolution, improving pickup reliability and transit performance.
