How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify applicability of the NOI listing and reference Note, item 139642. Print NMFC 139640, Class 100, Non-Hazardous on your BOL.
- Prevent puncture hazards: bag or sleeve loose needles, use rigid boxes or lined fiber/steel drums, fill voids, and mark cartons with a clear puncture warning.
- Palletize securely: heavy-duty cartons with corner boards and stretch wrap; for drums, band to pallets with drum rings. Keep boxed shipments stackable to optimize space.
- Provide exact counts by container and weight (e.g., 4 drums, 900 lb). Include commodity description “Needles, NOI” to speed inspections and quoting.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable rating—no density calculations, faster quotes, and cleaner audits.
- Accurate NOI labeling reduces reclass/inspection risks, helping avoid surprise rebills and delays.
- Durable boxing or drums cut puncture-related claims, protecting both your freight and co-loaded cargo.
- Packaging choice supports cost control: boxes stack to curb cube-driven charges, while drums handle bulk efficiently for consolidation.
