How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item as Nickel Group Articles, NOI, NMFC 139780, Class 125 on the BOL, and note if it’s boxed or crated for accurate handling instructions.
- Use sturdy boxes or well-braced wood crates with interior blocking to contain the high mass of nickel parts (e.g., alloy fittings, machined housings) and prevent shift damage.
- Add corrosion protection such as VCI paper, poly liners, or desiccant inside packaging; nickel resists rust but can stain or gall when abraded during transit.
- Provide exact weight and outside dimensions for each box or crate; class is fixed at 125, but carriers price more precisely and handle better with complete specs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 removes density math, speeding quotes and reducing reclass exposure for varied nickel articles under a single NOI catch-all.
- Clear packaging expectations (boxes or crates) streamline dock operations and lower OS&D risk, cutting claim costs on heavy metal components.
- Using the correct NOI item prevents misclassification penalties when a specific nickel part code doesn’t apply, stabilizing freight rates across lanes.
- Consolidated, crated shipments of nickel pieces improve forklift handling and cycle time, improving throughput and lowering accessorial chances.
