NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Unitize dense shapes on sturdy 48x40 pallets with steel banding and edge protectors; no loose bars or billets. Stretch-wrap to contain sharp corners and mark center of gravity.
  2. For granules, pellets, or shot, double-bag and place in sealed pails or drums, then secure inside cartons or crates so the freight moves strictly as packaged goods.
  3. Keep pallet weight within carrier limits and distribute evenly; avoid overhang and add non-slip dunnage or blocking to stop metal-on-wood sliding during transit.
  4. Print the BOL with “NMFC 139800, Class 65” and name the form (e.g., ingots, cathodes). Add moisture barriers or desiccants for long hauls or humid lanes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 65 improves LTL rate predictability and often lowers cost on dense nickel freight.
  • One code covering bars, billets, briquettes, cathodes, pellets, and slabs reduces reclass risk and post-audit disputes.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat fees, accelerating tender and pickup.
  • Clear packaged requirement aligns with carrier rules, minimizing damage claims, repack charges, and dock delays.
