How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack fasteners in sturdy double-wall boxes (or approved drums) with inner bags to contain loose pieces; add VCI liners if corrosion protection is needed.
- Keep carton weights manageable (25–50 lb is common for nails and washers), use dividers or partitions to prevent edge-to-edge abrasion, and fill voids so contents do not shift.
- Palletize evenly: place heaviest boxes low, use corner boards, stretch-wrap, and two straps per direction; add a top sheet or plywood if nails or rivets might puncture wrap.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 139820, Class 85, and describe as Fasteners NOI, boxed; include piece count and packaging type. Density is not required for rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85 eliminates density disputes and reduces reclass or audit fees.
- Single NMFC for bolts, nails, nuts, rivets, screws, and washers streamlines product setup, quoting, and BOL prep across mixed SKU shipments.
- Damage and loss risk drops when small parts are bagged and boxed correctly, cutting claim costs and reshipments.
- Proper palletization and weight control help avoid special handling fees, improving LTL efficiency and transit reliability.
