Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
139810.00 Blanks or Shapes, nickel-copper, NOI, see Note, item 139811, in boxes or crates, having a density of 9 pounds or greater per cubic foot, see Note, item 139812 100

Notes

Note 139811: NOTE-Applies only on articles manufactured solely by a blanking process.

Note 139812: NOTE-Density must be shown by shipper on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment. If density is not shown and shipment is inadvertently accepted, class will initially be assessed under the provisions of item 139780, naming 'Nickel Articles, NOI.' Upon satisfactory proof of actual density, class will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the commodity: solid nickel-copper blanks or shapes (NOI) in closed boxes or rigid crates; review NMFC notes 139811 and 139812 for scope and density method.
  2. Calculate density per handling unit: weigh, then L×W×H to get cubic feet; example: 240 lb crate at 3.0 cu ft = 80 pcf (well above the ≥9 pcf threshold).
  3. On the BOL, list “NMFC 139810, Class 100, non-hazardous,” plus count of boxes/crates, piece dimensions if needed, and total weight for fast carrier acceptance.
  4. Protect edges and faces: use corner guards and interleaving sheets to prevent scuffing, band to skids, and choose a crate for heavy or sharp profiles to avoid box puncture.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 100 rating at ≥9 pcf helps avoid reclass charges and unexpected rate adjustments.
  • Boxed or crated presentation improves stackability and damage prevention, reducing claim risk for dense metal parts.
  • High inherent density of nickel-copper means low cube per pound, often yielding better LTL pricing and trailer utilization.
  • Clear NMFC and non-hazardous status accelerates quoting and tendering, shortening lead times and administrative overhead.
