How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the commodity as “Nickel Group scrap, NOI” with package count on the BOL and list Class 60; density and dimensions are not required for rating.
- Use sturdy packaging: banded bundles on pallets with steel strapping, sealed drums, or heavy bins; cap sharp edges and stretch-wrap to contain fines or turnings.
- Keep scrap clean and dry—no hazardous residues, oils, or batteries; note mixed alloys or attachments and include individual package weights when available.
- Load for stability: center weight on pallets, avoid overhang, use 4-way entry pallets, and block/brace; photograph packages before pickup to support claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 60 reduces reclass risk and billing disputes, improving quote accuracy and budget control.
- Nonhazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options, speeding tender and pickup.
- Packaged-only requirement streamlines LTL handling, cutting damage and shortage exposure when properly banded and contained.
- Using NMFC 139950 ensures consistent routing for recyclers and metal buyers, enabling apples-to-apples benchmarking across lanes.
