How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 139990 and Class 85 on the BOL. The class is fixed (not density-based), but still include true weight, piece count, and an accurate description.
- Package wire rods as coils or tight bundles on skids or in crates. Use steel or heavy poly strapping with edge guards, coil cradles, and VCI wrap to fight corrosion.
- Stabilize each package: block and brace on the pallet, keep coil orientation consistent, and avoid top-loading with other metals to prevent band failure.
- Example line item: “2 packaged coils nickel-iron-chromium wire rods on 1 pallet, NMFC 139990, Class 85.” Photograph packaging before pickup for claim defense.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 yields predictable LTL quotes, simplifying cost modeling for routine alloy replenishments.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions, expanding your carrier options.
- Standard package handling speeds terminal throughput, cutting dwell time and reducing damage risk in mixed-metal lanes.
- Correct NMFC usage minimizes reclass invoices and disputes, protecting margins and delivery timelines.
