How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm inert status before booking: no explosives, no primers, and no propellant. Note “Inert/Unprimed – NMFC 14010” on the BOL to prevent hazmat misclassification.
- Package per Item 170 in sturdy boxes or crated assemblies. Block and brace heavy bomb bodies with internal cribbing, steel banding, and fork-entry cleats to stabilize weight.
- Measure outer crate or box dimensions and record actual scale weight, then calculate density (PCF). Higher density typically results in a lower freight class under NMFC 14010.
- Separate small metal items (bullet cores, empty cases, inert fuses) into partitioned cartons with liners to prevent abrasion. Keep box weights manageable for safe handling and stacking.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single NMFC for many inert munitions shapes simplifies rating and auditing, reducing reclass fees and paperwork across SKUs.
- Density-based class rewards compact packing: tighter crating and smart dunnage can lower class and cut LTL spend.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized carrier fees while maintaining standard LTL service windows.
- Damage risk control: proper crating and internal blocking reduce claims on heavy steel or concrete bomb bodies, protecting margins.
