How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the bill of lading: “Free ammonia not to exceed 50% by weight,” and list NMFC 141040, Class 70, packaging “in drums.”
- Use compatible drums and fittings: UN-rated HDPE or lined steel (e.g., 1H1/1A1) with EPDM or nitrile gaskets. Avoid copper or zinc contact and ensure vented bungs for off‑gassing.
- Treat as hazmat: include SDS, emergency contact per 49 CFR, and apply required marks/labels from your SDS (proper shipping name and UN ID). Select a carrier that accepts hazardous LTL.
- Palletize upright, band and stretch-wrap, and use absorbent/spill pallets. Note gross weight per drum and total shipment weight—class is weight-based, not density-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70 reduces reclass risk and keeps LTL rates consistent across lanes.
- Compliance (BOL certification, UN-rated drums, correct labels) cuts correction fees, delays, and damage claims from leaks or venting issues.
- Weight-based rating lets you optimize pallet loads to hit carrier breakpoints and lower cost per gallon moved.
- Hazmat-ready documentation streamlines carrier acceptance and improves on-time performance during seasonal ag demand.
