How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 141720 “Nut Meal, NOI” and Class 100 on the BOL. This is a fixed-class item, so no density calculation is needed.
- Use food-grade, poly-lined, double-wall corrugated boxes; heat-seal inner liners to contain fine particles and oil. Example: 25–50 lb cartons, seams taped H-pattern.
- Mark “Contains Tree Nuts” and apply clear product/lot labels. Confirm hazmat requirements for your formulation; include SDS and any required marks if applicable.
- Palletize with moisture barriers and slip sheets. Stretch-wrap securely with corner boards, avoid top-heavy stacking, and keep away from strong odors and humidity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 100 eliminates reweigh/reclass surprises.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces claims and detention from packaging or paperwork discrepancies.
- Allergen and hazmat compliance lowers refusal risk and avoids regulatory fines.
- Food-grade boxing and tight containment minimize spill cleanup and product loss, improving delivered yield.
