Note 142793: NOTE-See item 183845 for provisions applicable to drilling bits equipped with industrial diamond tips.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is a drilling bit without industrial diamond tips; if diamond-tipped, use the note reference for item 142793 instead.
- Protect cutting structures and threads with caps, edge guards, and VCI wrap, then place in a wood crate or heavy double-wall box to contain oil residue and grit.
- Palletize heavy bits low and centered; block and brace, add steel or heavy poly banding, and avoid overhang to prevent tip damage in cross-dock handling.
- List “NMFC 142790 – drilling bits (non-diamond)” on the BOL with piece count, packaging type, and full dimensions and weight to get accurate LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correctly identifying non-diamond bits avoids costly reclassifications and rebills that occur when carriers assume premium diamond tooling.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and removes hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost for rig, yard, and reman shipments.
- Robust crating and palletizing reduce claims from chipped cutters and bent threads, preserving uptime and avoiding emergency replacements.
- Clear specs (dims, weight, packaging) let carriers rate precisely when class is not set, improving rate predictability and minimizing accessorials.
