How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Heads, casing, NOI — NMFC 143270 — Class 70 — Non-Haz” to prevent reclass and speed carrier acceptance.
- Protect threaded ends with caps or thread protectors, apply light rust inhibitor, and band to 4x4 skids or V‑blocks to stop rolling.
- Crate single heavy pieces or shrink-wrap multi-piece sets on one pallet; keep within pallet footprint with no overhang for LTL.
- Mark center of gravity and “Do Not Stack,” and ensure forklift clearance; wipe away residual oil to avoid cleanup fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass charges and surprise rate increases.
- Non-hazardous status cuts paperwork and eliminates hazmat fees, accelerating tendering and pickup windows.
- Thread protection and proper blocking lower damage risk, preventing costly wellsite delays and replacement lead times.
- Clear NMFC wording on paperwork improves claims defensibility and unlocks better LTL routing and consolidation options.
