How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 143290 and note “carbide steel rotary bit inserts, boxed” on the BOL; apply Class 55 to avoid reclass.
- Individually sleeve each insert/teeth in foam or corrugated cells, add rigid dividers, and fill voids to prevent carbide edge chipping.
- Unitize multiple boxes on a sturdy pallet with stretch wrap, corner protectors, and a top sheet to resist clamp and fork pressure.
- Keep boxes dry and separate from oils or fluids; record piece count and net weight for accurate LTL quotes and receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable single class (55) streamlines rating, audits, and carrier acceptance.
- Lower LTL costs than many heavy industrial parts due to favorable Class 55.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions.
- Damage-mitigating packing reduces carbide chipping claims and rig downtime.
