How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm composition before quoting: fiber-only versus fiber-plus-additives, then reference NMFC 143500 and review Note item 143501 for any exceptions or subitems.
- Spell out the commodity on the BOL: “Sealing material, oil or gas well drilling, fibrous, NMFC 143500, non-hazardous,” and list packaging (e.g., 50 lb poly-lined bags on pallet or 1,000 kg supersack).
- Protect against moisture and fiber loss: use lined bags or supersacks with inner liners, top-sheet and stretch wrap, and corner boards so pallets can be safely stacked.
- Plan site delivery needs common to rig yards: request forklift-capable delivery for supersacks, avoid overhang on pallets, and add dust-control labeling if fibers are prone to nuisance dust.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC 143500 usage reduces reclass and reweigh disputes, stabilizing LTL quotes and preventing surprise carrier fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, improving lane coverage to remote well and pipe yards.
- Clear packaging descriptors (bags, boxes, supersacks) streamline dock handling and cut detention, especially on appointment-based oilfield deliveries.
- Moisture-resistant packaging and secure unitization lower claim risk for clumping, leakage, or fiber escape, preserving margins on repeat shipments.
