How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL commodity as Plugs, cementing, in packages and include part numbers, top/bottom plug style, material (rubber, composite, aluminum) and piece count.
- Package each plug so wiper fins and cores cannot deform: use double-wall cartons or wood crates, cap ends, add foam or V-blocks, then strap and stretch-wrap to a pallet.
- Record exact exterior dimensions including pallet overhang, corner boards, and banding; list total and per-piece weight to support rating since no fixed class is specified.
- Mark cartons Do Not Stack if fins could crush, keep units clean and dry, and note wellsite or rig ID to speed receiving at yards or service bases.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC wording reduces reclass risk and surprise fees, keeping LTL quotes aligned with invoices.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, shortening booking and transit timelines.
- Protective packaging lowers damage claims and prevents rig downtime from delayed or unusable plugs.
- Accurate dims and weights help carriers optimize space, improving rate options and eligibility for density or minimum charge breaks.
